Phrasal Verbs

There are many kind of verbs in English we use to speak every day such as linking verbs, modal verbs, and ordinary verbs, etc. But, what about phrasal verbs? what are they?

Phrasal verbs are verbs plus a preposition or adverb which create new meaning different from the original ones in dictionary.

Examples:
I looked it up in the dictionary. = checked its meaning.
He suddenly showed up. = appeared

There are four types of phrasal verbs. Phrasal verbs can be separable or inseparable and they can take an object (transitive ones) or not (intransitive ones). Here is a guide to the basics of phrasal verbs.

  • Phrasal verbs can be separable: The object is placed between the verb and the preposition. Examples: I saw off Nam at the airport yesterday morning. OR I saw him off at the airport yesterday morning. (Separable phrasal verbs MUST be separated when a pronoun is used).

  • Phrasal verbs can be inseparable: The object is placed after the preposition. Examples: We set off for Vung Tau beach. Or we set off for it.

  • Phrasal verbs can take an object (transitive ones): The object appears in both places. Examples: I looked the telephone number up in the yellow pages. OR I looked up the telephone number in the yellow pages.

  • Phrasal verbs cannot take an object (intransitive ones): The object does not appears. These phrasal verbs are ALWAYS inseparable. Examples: The thieves got away.
TIP!
If you are not sure whether a phrasal verb is separable or inseparable, ALWAYS use a noun or nouns phrase and DO NOT separate. In this manner, you will always be correct!

Example: i looked up the word in my dictionary.
